HC Deb 26 March 1963 vol 674 cc1093-4
2. Mr. N. Pannell

asked the Secretary for Technical Co-operation whether a decision has now been reached regarding the retirement and compensation terms for officers and former officers in the service of the West African research departments in Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria; and if he will make a statement.

The Secretary for Technical Cooperation (Mr. Dennis Vosper)

I am glad to inform the House that Her Majesty's Government will ensure the payment to pensionable overseas officers serving with the West African research organisations of compensation for loss of career similar to that provided for overseas officers in the Public Services of West African Governments. I am in consultation with the West African Governments about the best means of giving effect to this, and I propose to invite representatives of the officers concerned to discuss with representatives of my Department the detailed arrangements for a compensation scheme.

Mr. Pannell

Is my right hon. Friend aware that his reply will give great relief and satisfaction to these research officers, who were placed at a disadvantage following the independence of the West African territories? Is he further aware of the gratitude which will be extended to him personally for his persistent, valiant and successful assaults on the Treasury bastions?
