HC Deb 26 March 1963 vol 674 c1108
12. Mr. MacColl

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what increase in expensive site subsidies he anticipates will arise from making available for housing development land at present in the green belt area.

Sir K. Joseph

Until decisions have been taken on what land is likely to be developed, it is not possible to make any estimates of cost.

Mr. MacColl

Is the Minister aware that the day after he had announced in the House that he was taking the initiative in the Lee Valley, his proposals were welcomed on the ground that they would raise the value of the land from £10,000 to £40,000? Does he not think that there is a serious problem here of a heavy burden on public funds which he should take steps to abate?

Sir K. Joseph

The whole House must recognise that in areas of high demand, prices are bound to be high.
