HC Deb 25 March 1963 vol 674 cc952-3
54. Mr. Mackie

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what protests he has received from any of the breed societies or any other farming body about the importation of Friesian cattle from Holland, one of which was found to be suffering from leptospirosis.

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Mr. James Scott-Hopkins)

None, Sir.

Mr. Mackie

Does not the Joint Parliamentary Secretary feel that that is rather strange considering what was let loose on his right hon. Friend 18 months ago when a Charollais animal took this disease?

Mr. Scott-Hopkins

No; I do not think that there is any comparison between the two. In any event, since that happened arrangements have proved so efficient that I think there is no longer any cause for anxiety.

Mr. Mackie

Owing to the most unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply to my supplementary question, I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment.
