§ 33. Mr. Swinglerasked the Minister of Labour, in view of the continuing problem of unemployment among disabled 959 workers in Newcastle-under-Lyme, what action is being taken by his Department to expand Remploy facilities and to discuss with employers the provision of special opportunities for the disabled.
§ Mr. WhitelawThere are no plans to expand Remploy's facilities at Newcastle-under-Lyme. Our local officers systematically approach employers on behalf of the disabled unemployed.
§ Mr. SwinglerIs the Parliamentary Secretary aware that amongst the 5 per cent.-plus unemployed in Newcastle-under-Lyme, there is a substantial core of disabled workers who have been unemployed for a long time? Is he not aware of the recent report of the local committee which showed a much higher level of unemployment among disabled workers in Newcastle and north Staffordshire generally than in other areas of the Midlands? Should not his Department, therefore, take action to provide opportunities for these men?
§ Mr. WhitelawI am aware of all that. I am also aware that over the past year, over 220 disabled people were placed in employment. Last month alone, despite the difficulties of the season, thirteen were placed in jobs, including three in Remploy.
§ Mr. SwinglerBut how many were left unemployed?
§ Mr. WhitelawThere were 197 unemployed at the latest count on 11th February.
