HC Deb 06 March 1963 vol 673 cc384-5
25. Mr. Goodhart

asked the Minister of Transport what observations his Department has made to date on the effectiveness of Panda pedestrian crossings; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Hay

We are calling for a full report on the results of the experiment with panda crossings when the 12-month trial period ends on 2nd April. The present indications are that these crossings are certainly no less safe than zebra crossings and that, once the public becomes accustomed to them, they are generally proving successful.

Mr. Goodhart

Can my hon. Friend say roughly how soon after the report is received he intends to make an announcement about whether these crossings will become a permanent part of our traffic scene?

Mr. Hay

The 12 months' trial period, as I said, ends at the beginning of April. The results will take a little time to assess. I rather doubt whether we shall be able to say anything much before May.

Mr. J. Wells

Will there be any indication in the report of how often each of these crossings has been used per day?

Mr. Hay

I am afraid that I cannot say that without notice.
