3. Mr. Robert Cooke

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that a motor vehicle that has been written off as a total wreck can be repaired and sold as roadworthy without its history being revealed to the purchaser; and whether he will take steps to rectify this.

Mr. Galbraith

If the Question refers to vehicles for which a total loss payment has been made by an insurance company, the answer to the first part is "Yes". As to the second part, we have no evidence to show that existing legal safeguards against the sale of defective vehicles are inadequate. The Department is currently engaged in correspondence on this matter with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Is my hon. Friend aware that I am grateful for the researches he has obviously done? Will he keep this up and take note of a recent case, details of which I will send him?
