§ 16. Mr. Stonesasked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science, as representing the Lord President of the Council, to what extent he has taken into consideration the unemployment situation in the Consett Parliamentary Division when preparing his long-term North-East Coast regional plan.
§ Mr. Denzil FreethIn preparing his plan for the North-East, my noble Friend has taken into consideration the unemployment situation in all parts of the region, including the hon. Member's constituency.
§ Mr. StonesIs the hon. Gentleman aware that in the Consett Employment Exchange area there is 2.9 per cent. unemployment and that there is 4.7 per cent. unemployment in the Stanley Employment Exchange area? Employment prospects there are very poor. Is he 11 aware that coal mining has been contracting and that several further closures are expected? Further, does he realise that the situation in the steel industry is very serious? Does he realise that if the Government's plan does not provide for alternative industries in the area there will be very grave dissatisfaction and disappointment felt by my constituents?
§ Mr. FreethI agree that the unemployment situation in the hon. Gentleman's constituency, as in almost the whole of the North-East, is very difficult indeed, and this is why it is receiving special consideration by the Government. I hope that the hon. Gentleman will be satisfied when he hears later this week what the Government propose to do.
§ Mr. ShinwellIn reply to several Questions the hon. Gentleman has said that a statement will be made towards the end of the week. Will he be quite definite about this? Will the statement be made in this House, or will it be made in the other place so that we cannot get at his noble Friend?
§ Mr. FreethI fully realise that the right hon. Gentleman cannot ask questions of my noble Friend in the other place, but I have every hope that the statement will be in such a form as to enable him to fulfil his desires.
