HC Deb 17 July 1963 vol 681 cc498-9
4. Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has approved the scheme for the piping of the Monkland Canal at Coatbridge; if he will state the amount of the grant he will authorise; and if he will announce a starting date for the scheme.

The Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Gilmour Leburn)

Grant at the special rate of 90 per cent. of the approved cost has been accepted by the town council and, subject to consideration of technical details, work can start as soon as tenders are approved.

Mr. Dempsey

Does the Under-secretary realise that this information will be welcomed? Will he bear in mind that the campaign to get rid of this obnoxious eyesore from the town of Coatbridge has been going on since 1938? Will he make sure that there are no delays at Departmental level?

Mr. Leburn

Certainly. I hope that the scheme will now get ahead as soon as ever possible.
