HC Deb 17 July 1963 vol 681 cc515-6
32. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what further schemes of cross-river communication he proposes for the city of Glasgow, particularly in the Govan division.

Mr. Leburn

A new bridge across the Clyde near Carnoustie Street forms a part of the inner ring road proposed by the corporation in the quinquennial review of the development plan. This was approved in principle by the Secretary of State last year.

Mr. Rankin

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that just a fortnight ago we opened a new means of cross-river communication in my constituency, at Linthouse, which we all welcomed? Is he also aware that that tunnel was accepted in principle ten years' ago? Is he now telling me, in effect, that before we get the Carnoustie Street bridge we shall have to wait another ten years?

Mr. Leburn

The initiative on this must come from Glasgow and a provisional order will be needed. I understand that Glasgow is at present in consultation with the Clyde Navigation Trust.
