HC Deb 26 February 1963 vol 672 cc1074-5
24. Mr. Channon

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what legal steps would have to be taken in Britain and France to end the Condominium over the New Hebrides; and if he will recommend to the French Government that the Condominium should end.

Mr. Fisher

The legal steps would depend mainly on what was to replace the Condominium, but in Britain they would include the revocation of the Orders-in-Council giving the force of the law to the Anglo-French Protocol providing for the Condominium and to its amendments. It is not however my intention to recommend to the French Government the end of the Condominium.

Mr. Channon

Does my hon. Friend find it very easy to administer this Condominium since the breakdown of the Brussels negotiations?

Mr. Fisher

I do not think that the Brussels negotiations have made any difference at all to the administration of the New Hebrides.
