23. Mr. Slaterasked the Minister of Aviation if he will make a statement on his examination, together with the Secretary of State for Air, regarding the extension of civil aircraft facilities at Middleton St. George.
§ 15. Commander Keransasked the Minister of Aviation what steps he is taking to improve civil aerodrome facilities in the Tees-side area, bearing in mind the urgent need to attract industry to the area.
§ Mr. J. AmeryI would refer the hon. Members to the reply which I gave to the right hon. Member for Middlesbrough, East (Mr. Bottomley) last Monday. I have now agreed with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Air that officials of both Departments should examine what can be done to extend civil aviation facilities at Middleton St. George and we have asked for an urgent report.
Mr. SlaterIs the Minister aware that we from the Tees-side will be very grateful for that reply? Is he further aware 888 that I tabled a similiar Question to him when he held his previous office? Is he further aware that I led a deputation to the Under-Secretary of State for Air on the same issue last year? If extension of facilities could be granted at this airfield at Middleton St. George, it would be a great asset to the people on Tees-side.
§ Mr. AmeryI well remember the representations the hon. Member made. We are studying this urgently and I hope we shall be able to give a satisfactory answer.
§ Mr. BurdenWould my right hon. Friend confirm that, if this airport could show foreign flights in the region of 1,000 a year, Customs facilities would then probably be provided?
§ Mr. AmeryThat is a rather different question. I should be grateful if my hon. Friend would give me notice of it.
