§ 19. Mr. Swinglerasked the Minister of Education if he will ensure that the replacement of Friarswood School in Newcastle-under-Lyme is included in the next school building programme for Staffordshire.
§ Mr. ChatawayMy right hon. Friend has been unable to include this project in the 1964–65 programme.
§ Mr. SwinglerIs the Parliamentary Secretary aware that his Department consented to the replacement of this school in 1936 but unfortunately the war stopped work on it? Ever since that time, 27 years ago, his Department has refused to allow the school to be replaced. Is he not aware that it is a public scandal in north Staffordshire that this obsolete school is still in use? It should be replaced urgently. Will he, therefore, kindly reconsider his decision?
§ Mr. ChatawayThe 1964–65 major building programme for Staffordshire has had to be devoted to projects needed to provide school accommodation for additional children expected from the growing population and new housing. Even so, it totals over £1¼ million.
§ Mr. SwinglerHas not the Parliamentary Secretary just heard the support in the House for urgent priority to be given to getting rid of slum schools? This school was considered obsolete 27 years ago when his Department agreed to its replacement. Therefore, will not he immediately put it on the list as an urgent matter?
§ Mr. ChatawayNo. I am not able to put it immediately on the list.
§ Mr. SwinglerOn a point of order. In view of the totally unsatisfactory answer, I give notice that I shall raise this matter on the Adjournment.
