HC Deb 11 February 1963 vol 671 cc931-2
32. Mr. Pavitt

asked the Lord Privy Seal why the British Broadcasting Corporation discontinued their broadcasts to Portugal in 1957; when the intention to transmit a daily half hour programme is likely to be realised; and what means are being used to convey news and views to the people of Portugal in the absence of this radio link.

Mr. P. Thomas

The British Broadcasting Corporation's broadcasts to Portugal were discontinued in 1957 in order to release resources for other services then considered of a higher priority: it is the intention to resume broadcasting in Portuguese on 28th April. In the meantime the commercial news agencies supply British news to the Portuguese press and radio and the Embassy has an information officer.

Mr. Pavitt

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that a large section of public opinion in this country opposes the way in which political prisoners are being treated in Portugal? Will he ask the broadcasters to bear this in mind with a view, perhaps, to securing an amnesty? Will he consider applying the same techniques to Dr. Salazar as are being applied now to President de Gaulle?

Mr. Thomas

The purpose of these broadcasts is to do what we can to bring about better understanding of the British point of view in Portugal.
