§ 11. Mr. Emrys Hughesasked the Lord Privy Seal the total expenditure incurred by the Foreign Office in connection with the negotiations to enter the Common Market.
§ Mr. HeathI would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to my hon. 921 and gallant Friend the Member for Arundel and Shoreham (Captain Kerby) on 6th February.
§ Mr. HughesCan the Minister save me some research by stating exactly what that sum is? Can he tell us what we have got for this expenditure?
§ Mr. HeathIf the hon. Member looks up the reply, he will see the detailed figures. Approximately, the additional cost to the Foreign Office was £100,000 and the cost of the regular London-based staff was £90,000, making a total of £190,000. I should have thought that as this House authorised the Government to enter into the negotiations such a sum would have been considered a moderate amount for the 16 months' work which was carried out.
