HC Deb 11 February 1963 vol 671 cc920-1
11. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Lord Privy Seal the total expenditure incurred by the Foreign Office in connection with the negotiations to enter the Common Market.

Mr. Heath

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Arundel and Shoreham (Captain Kerby) on 6th February.

Mr. Hughes

Can the Minister save me some research by stating exactly what that sum is? Can he tell us what we have got for this expenditure?

Mr. Heath

If the hon. Member looks up the reply, he will see the detailed figures. Approximately, the additional cost to the Foreign Office was £100,000 and the cost of the regular London-based staff was £90,000, making a total of £190,000. I should have thought that as this House authorised the Government to enter into the negotiations such a sum would have been considered a moderate amount for the 16 months' work which was carried out.
