HC Deb 10 December 1963 vol 686 cc205-6
26. Sir A. Hurd

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what provision is being made for the extension of the work of the Settlement Board in Kenya after the Colony becomes an independent member of the Commonwealth; and to what extent the United Kingdom Government will continue to be responsible for the appointment of the Settlement Board and the finance of its operations

Mr. Fisher

The European Agricultural Settlement Trust was established under local legislation. The British Government have no responsibility for the appointment of the trustees nor for the financing of its operations.

Sir A. Hurd

Is not this the body which is looking after the settlement of the 1 million acres and any further land which, we understand, is now to be allocated for resettlement? If not, has the body been renamed? Can my hon. Friend tell us about the future of this body, which the Government are financing?

Mr. Fisher

I think that the body referred to by my hon. Friend in his Question is the European Settlement Board which was discussed earlier, arising from the Question asked earlier today by the right hon. and learned Member for Rowley Regis and Tipton (Mr. A. Henderson).
