§ 32. Mr. A. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will ensure that no moneys or bequests from the late Guy Burgess are transmitted to Moscow to Mr. Kim Philby.
§ Mr. MaudlingNo, Sir. The late Guy Burgess was non-resident for the purposes of Exchange Control. Under the normal rules, any assets of his estate in this country are freely transferable to any other country.
§ Mr. LewisIs not the Chancellor aware that most people would think it very wrong for currency to go out of the country to this particular individual?
§ Mr. MaudlingIn the first place, the currency is already out because he was non-resident. In the second place, I think that it is absolutely wrong for the Government to use powers given to them for one purpose for a quite different purpose.
