HC Deb 11 April 1963 vol 675 c1459
11. Sir H. Harrison

asked the Minister of Education how many grammar schools in East Suffolk have been closed in the last 12 years; how many have had major alterations; and how many it is proposed to close.

Mr. Chataway

One boys' school has been closed and replaced by a mixed school; one school has moved into new buildings and five have had major alterations; one school will be closed as soon as the pupils can be accommodated elsewhere.

Sir H. Harrison

Is my hon. Friend aware that the East Suffolk County Council has a very fine record in the provision of new places and in the reconditioning of primary and secondary schools, but that there is a feeling abroad in the county that it is not so concerned about places in grammar schools? I am glad, therefore, to have had his reply. Will he ask the Minister to bear in mind that in any future building programme grammar school places should have a higher priority in this county?

Mr. Chataway

Yes, Sir. My hon. and gallant Friend will have noticed that five grammar schools during this period have been given major alterations.
