HC Deb 09 April 1963 vol 675 c1063
Mr. Skeffington

I beg to present a Petition to this honourable House. It is signed by 5,500 persons, and is against night flying at London Airport. It is in the following terms: That the noise of aircraft leaving London (Heathrow) Airport at night and the noise from aircraft engines being run for test purposes at night are so great that their sleep is constantly being interrupted. That in the case of Halsey v. Esso Petroleum Company Limited, Mr. Justice Veale held that "Night is the time when the ordinary man takes his rest", and that "A man is entitled to sleep during the night in his own house" and granted an injunction restraining the defendants from causing a nuisance to the plaintiff between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that this honourable House will through legislation prohibit the flight of all aircraft from London (Heathrow) Airport and the running of engines for testing at the same airport between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. so that they may enjoy the sleep to which they feel they are entitled. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

To lie upon the Table.
