asked the Minister of Health whether he will make a statement on the plans for increasing the number of maternity beds in north Staffordshire, with particular reference to the provision of a new maternity hospital.

Mr. Braine

Work on a new maternity unit of 173 beds at the City General Hospital is expected to start early next year.

Dr. Stross

Can the Parliamentary Secretary tell me how long it is thought it will take before it is completed?

Mr. Braine

It will take about two and a half years.
