HC Deb 27 November 1962 vol 668 cc194-5
20. Mr. Dance

asked the President of the Board of Trade what discussions were held between his Department and representatives of the fishing tackle industry in this country prior to the negotiation of the Anglo-Japanese Commercial Treaty.

Mr. Green

Between September, 1961, and July, 1962, there were three meetings of officials of the Department with the Secretary of the trade association of the fishing tackle industry at which the progress of the negotiations for an AngloJapanese Commercial Treaty was discussed.

Mr. Dance

Is my hon. Friend aware that there is consternation among members of the Association of Fishing Tackle Makers about the signing of this Treaty? Would not this be the correct opportunity to see that fishing reels are brought into the general import allowance for fishing tackle? Can he give the Association some assurance that under the Treaty's safeguard clause fishing reels win be excluded?

Mr. Green

The general safeguard included in the proposed Treaty will cover all imports from Japan and not just selected items, provided that disruption of trade is proved.

Mr. Dance

On point of order. In view of the complications of this matter, I give notice that I wish to raise it on the Adjournment.
