HC Deb 05 November 1962 vol 666 c587
18. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Minister of Labour how many men, boys, women and girls, respectively, were registered as unemployed in the Bathgate area on 15th October, 1962; and what unemployment percentages these represent.

Mr. Whitelaw

The figures are 1,344 men, 84 boys, 232 women and 46 girls. The total of 1,706 represents a percentage rate of 6.3.

Mr. Dalyell

In view of the rate of 6.3 per cent., would the Minister tell us when the advance factory which has been promised for the Whitburn area is likely to start being built?

Mr. Whitelaw

I could not tell the hon. Member that. What I could tell him—and he will appreciate it, because it is relevant to the area—is that the British Motor Corporation at Bathgate is providing substantial employment and is still recruiting.
