§ 17. Mr. Chatawayasked the Postmaster-General whether he will continue to accept entries in the telephone directory from agents of building societies, even where the agency does not constitute the whole of a firm's business.
§ The Postmaster-General (Mr. Reginald Bevins)To prevent the London telephone directory from becoming even more unwieldy than it is, I have had to discontinue separate entries for agents under the name of the society they represent. I am, however, examining the case to which my hon. Friend has drawn my attention, and I will write to him at an early date.
§ Mr. ChatawayWill my right hon. Friend accept that it is not worth making the telephone directory smaller if the information that people want is not there? Are there not firms which really need to have entries under two separate headings in the telephone directory?
§ Mr. BevinsYes, but, of course, the size of the London telephone directory is increasing at the rate of 5 to 10 per cent. every year and, obviously, it cannot go on indefinitely. There are special cases, and this may well be one of them.
