HC Deb 17 May 1962 vol 659 cc1518-9
17. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is taking to increase the number of new jobs being provided in Dundee under the Local Employment Act.

Mr. N. Macpherson

My right hon. Friend is well aware of the need for more employment in Dundee and will continue his efforts to steer new projects there. The facilities of the Local Employment Act are available for any firms prepared to go to Dundee or expand there.

Mr. Thomson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the redundancy referred to in my Question No. 16, which is not a big redundancy, entails forty-seven people losing their jobs but that this number is substantially in excess of the number of jobs which the Government have so far been able to bring in during two years under the Local Employment Act? Is not this an abject failure, and will he do something more about it?

Mr. Macpherson

There are about 900 jobs at present in prospect from new building and other developments in the area.
