HC Deb 15 May 1962 vol 659 cc1120-1
4. Mr. Fletcher

asked the Minister of Works whether, in view of the likelihood of the disused pre-Conquest Chapel of Odder Dux at Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, coming into the market, he will make arrangements for his Department to take over this unique and precisely dated monument of Anglo-Saxon architecture.

Mr. R. Thompson

Yes, Sir. My right hon. Friend would like to take this pre-Conquest Chapel into his care and he is negotiating with the Church Commissioners for the transfer to his Department.

Mr. Fletcher

This will be very generally welcomed. May we take it that the normal arrangements will be made for putting the place into repair and giving the public general access to it?

Mr. Thompson

Yes, Sir. There will be some necessary repairs. We have, for instance, to repair the nave roof. The chapel is already open to visitors on application to a local custodian, and we expect to continue that arrangement.
