HC Deb 15 May 1962 vol 659 c1130
13. Sir Richard Pilkington

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will introduce a system by which two people engaged in a telephone conversation can be made aware that somebody else is desiring to speak to one or other of them.

Miss Pike

My right hon. Friend is grateful to my hon. Friend for this suggestion, but, unfortunately, there is no satisfactory way of providing the facility in the public service.

Sir Richard Pilkington

Will my hon. Friend continue to get her experts to study this matter, because if such an innovation were brought in it would save a great deal of time and exasperation?

Miss Pike

We will keep the matter under review, but it is not always in the interests of subscribers to have their telephone conversations interrupted in this way.
