HC Deb 10 May 1962 vol 659 cc618-9
8. Mr. Brockway

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs if he will initiate an inquiry into the extent to which newly-wed couples are unable to find suitable accommodation to begin their married life.

Mr. Rippon

No, Sir.

Mr. Brockway

Will the hon. Gentleman whisper into the ear of the Minister that I have already started a census of this character in Slough, where I write to newly-weds when the happy occasion of their marriage is reported in the local Press? Is he aware that as a result of the census I am taking I find that many newly-weds begin their married life under conditions which are absolutely appalling? Is it not desirable that this inquiry should be extended to a wider area?

Mr. Rippon

I am sure the hon. Gentleman has his own good reasons for that admirable initiative, but I do not think that the general survey he suggests would serve any useful purpose.
