§ 34. Sir B. Jannerasked the Minister of Defence whether he is aware that the proposal of the United States to set off a hydrogen bomb in outer space may have unfortunate effects with regard to the disturbance of the Van Allen belts; and whether he will arrange for these dangers to be checked by the scientific staff of his Department so that official representations can be made to the United States Government.
§ Mr. WatkinsonI would refer the hon. Member to the statement made yesterday in answer to Questions on this subject by my right hon. Friend, the Prime Minister.
§ Mr. RankinThat was a very unsatisfactory Answer.
§ Sir B. JannerWill the right hon. Gentleman say whether he is satisfied that there is not increasing danger, and very considerable danger? If there is increasing danger, will he see to it that the matter is inquired into properly so to that no further action may be taken?
§ Mr. WatkinsonAs my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister said yesterday, our defence scientists have been in close touch with the Americans over this test. I must make it plain that from the defence aspect I consider that it is essential.
§ Mr. RankinWhen the right hon. Gentleman talks about his defence scientists, is not he referring to military scientists who are not so well informed in this matter as the true research scientists?
§ Mr. WatkinsonThat would be a matter of opinion.
§ Mr. RankinIt is a matter of fact.
