HC Deb 03 May 1962 vol 658 c1176
5. Mr. Grant-Ferris

asked the Minister of Education if is aware that a child, particulars of whom have been sent to him by the hon. Member for Nantwich, is compelled to travel long distances at cost to public funds to attend a Cheshire grammar school while a nearby Shropshire grammar school could provide her with suitable education; and if he will discuss with the two education authorities concerned the possibility of transferring the child to the Shropshire school.

Sir D. Eccles

This child was admitted to the Nantwich and Acton Grammar School at the request of her parents and with the agreement of the Cheshire local education authority. I understand that the parents have not asked for their daughter to be moved from this school.

Mr. Grant-Ferris

Is not it important that the best possible use should be made of the child's brain and that she should get a good education? Is not it the case that if she has to travel an inordinate distance to school every day that will prevent her obtaining the best possible education?

Sir D. Eccles

My information is that the child is getting a good education and her parents do not wish her to be moved; nor would the Cheshire authority wish her to go.
