§ 9. Mr. W. Hamiltonasked the Minister of Works what was the cost of repairing and renovating Nottingham Cottage.
§ Lord John HopeThe cost was £4,130, of which £3,110 was met from 187 the New Works Subhead of the Royal Palaces Vote, £370 from funds at the disposal of the Sovereign, and £650 by the occupant.
§ Mr. HamiltonCan the right hon. Gentleman tell us what useful national service this occupant performs that he should have access to this kind of national assistance? Can the Minister tell us whether any rent is paid to the Ministry to recoup it for the cost of redecoration? Is it true that the occupants were allowed by the Ministry even to choose the colour of the decorations although, according to their admission as reported in the Sunday Express, they did not pay for the decorations?
§ Lord John HopeI am not responsible for the services rendered by occupants of these grace and favour houses nor for answering for them. During occupation a resident of these houses is responsible for interior decoration and rates, water, lighting and heating charges.
§ Mr. HamiltonCan the Minister say whether a rent is paid?
§ Lord John HopeNo.
§ Mr. HamiltonCan he say why not? Why should people like this be a burden on the taxpayer? The taxpayer is sufficiently burdened without this. These people, like everyone else in London, should have to pay their own way.
§ Lord John HopeGrace and favour buildings are not my property.
