§ 37. Sir B. Jannerasked the President of the Board of Trade how long the Monopolies Commission has had under consideration the reference relating to the supply of electrical equipment for mechanically propelled land vehicles; why it has taken many months to deal with this particular reference; and when their Report can be expected.
§ Mr. ErrollThis reference was made on 18th April, 1957. I understand that the Commission hope to make their report before the end of the year, and that the reason for the length of the inquiry has been the technical complexity of the subject.
§ Sir B. JannerIn view of the fact that the terms of reference were decided in 1957, does not the Minister think that a considerable length of time to have been taken, much longer than should have been the case? Is not the answer to increase the staff of the Monopolies Commission to deal with the matter?
§ Mr. ErrollIt is a very complicated investigation covering eight classes of goods and no less than four monopoly suppliers. The Commission says that it does not need additional staff.
§ Sir B. JannerBut is the Minister aware that it has taken five years?
§ Mr. ErrollI can do my own arithmetic.
