HC Deb 14 March 1962 vol 655 cc1310-1
32. Mr. P. Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Transport if he will make a report on trunk roads in the County Borough of Derby following the recent visit to that area of his Parliamentary Secretary.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport (Mr. John Hay)

Apart from very short lengths of A.6, A.38, A.52 and A.516, the only trunk road in the County Borough of Derby is A.5111, known as the Derby Ring Road. The limited time I had available to spend in the Derby area on this occasion was taken up with an inspection of major trunk road schemes outside the county borough boundary. In consequence I had time to inspect only one section of the Ring Road.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Will the hon. Gentleman represent to the Minister that the traffic congestion at certain junctions on the ring road is now a very expensive affair? Is he also aware that while the people of Derby welcome the Minister's readiness to waive the objections to traffic signals which he has held for so long, traffic signals are only a temporary measure, and when he gets his engineer's report will he bear in mind that a proper scheme of roundabouts would be a very good investment?

Mr. Hay

I will bring to the notice of my right hon. Friend the views of the right hon. Gentleman on this point.
