asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give figures showing the results of fishing, giving herrings separately, by north-east Scotland fishing fleets during the last six months and how these figures compare with the corresponding figures during each of the last five years.

I regret that the information is not available precisely in the form asked for by the hon. and learned Member. With permission, however, I shall circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT statistics of the fish landed by British vessels during the relevant periods at the fishing ports of North-East Scotland.

As the information is not immediately forthcoming, in the information which he is about to circulate, will the Minister indicate the effects of the competition, sometimes very violent, of Continental fishing fleets upon the operations of the Scottish fleets in the North Sea, with a view to protecting not only Scottish fishermen and trawler owners, but the food of Britain?
