HC Deb 05 June 1962 vol 661 c180
12. Mr. Parker

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he has been consulted about the proposed burning down of Coldharbour, a farmhouse of some architectural interest near Ampthill, belonging to the Bedford Estates, on 14th July.

Mr. Rippon

The local planning authority has consulted my right hon. Friend about a notice it has received of intention to demolish the building, which is no longer required for agricultural purposes. It is arranging to inspect it and will let him have a report. It has power to submit a preservation order.

Mr. Parker

Is not the proposal to burn down this building in this way one of the more vulgar of the publicity stunts of the Duke of Bedford?

Mr. Rippon

I understand from Press reports that this mock-Nero saturnalia, as it has been called, is not now to take place. Now action remains to be taken, if necessary, by the county council in the first instance.
