HC Deb 12 July 1962 vol 662 c1491
10. Mrs. White

asked the Minister of Education if he will now consider making half-time teaching superannuable.

Sir D. Eccles

This proposal would require legislation and will be kept under review. At present it is doubtful if a majority of teachers would be in favour of it or whether it is an important factor in the decision of married women to return to teaching.

Mrs. White

Does not the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that this is much the most cogent argument with almost any woman if she wants to return to at least half-time teaching and that it would be a far better incentive than anything else he has offered?

Sir D. Eccles

Naturally, I look carefully at the cogent arguments, but such evidence as I have shows that this is not a main factor.
