HC Deb 12 July 1962 vol 662 c1488
3. Mr. Owen

asked the Minister of Education whether he is aware of the difficulties which affect education services at Longhorsley Church of England school, Northumberland; what steps are being taken to help the school authorities; and whether he will make a statement.

Sir D. Eccles

The Newcastle Diocesan Education Committee wishes to replace this school by means of a minor project. I shall consider this proposal sympathetically as soon as the necessary resources are available.

Mr. Owen

Is the Minister really aware of the conditions of this rural school? It has no playground, no facilities for games, lavatory accommodation is very inadequate, and many of the children have to travel a quarter of a mile to the school canteen. Surely, this merits urgent consideration. We are told that it is to be considered in the next review. Can we be told when the next review will take place?

Sir D. Eccles

I quite agree that this is a school which badly needs replacing and I hope that before too long it will be possible to increase the minor works allocation.
