§ 32. Mr. Holmanasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he has reached a decision with regard to the compulsory purchase order submitted to him by the Metropolitan borough of Bethnal Green covering certain properties in Corfield Street, Wilmot Street and Finnis Street, London, E.2.
Dr. HillAs the hon. Member knows, this is a contentious order and the inquiry took two days. I have not yet reached a decision, but will issue it as soon as possible.
§ Mr. HolmanI regret the delay by the Minister. May I ask whether he is aware that, in addition to 30 families having received orders to quit, approximately 150 other families are refusing to pay the increased rents which they originally agreed to pay under duress because of the appalliing housing conditions which exist and shortages in East London?
Dr. HillAs the hon. Member will appreciate, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the details. There has been no unreasonable delay. I have had the report for a fortnight and a decision will be issued in a very few days.
§ Mr. M. StewartIs the Minister aware that the landlords have stated that they feel obliged to push up the rents because, if they do not, they may be the subject of a take-over bid? Does not this indicate the growing unsuitability of 1506 private landlordism for providing or looking after accommodation of this kind?
Dr. HillI ought not and I will not make comments or reply to questions which would seem to have a bearing on this case, which has yet to be decided.
