§ 18. Mr. Longdenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many immigrants have entered the colony of Hong Kong during the last 12 years; how many multi-storey resettlement blocks have been built since 1955; and at what rate they are now being erected.
§ Mr. H. FraserIt is estimated that since 1950 some 800,000 immigrants have entered the Colony, legally and illegally, and that 200,000 children have been born to these people since their arrival. Two hundred domestic multi-storey resettlement blocks have been built since 1955, each capable of housing more than 2,000 people. They are now being completed at the rate of one block every nine days.
§ Mr. LongdenWhile thanking my hon. Friend for that Answer, may I ask whether he agrees that this splendid effort has been achieved without any financial assistance from Her Majesty's Government, which, therefore, makes it all the more necessary that we should ensure that the best possible terms are obtained in the Brussels negotiations to protect this Colony's exports?
§ Mr. FraserYes, Sir.
