HC Deb 05 July 1962 vol 662 c674
13. Mr. Boyden

asked the Minister of Education if, in view of the increase of university awards, he now proposes to ask local education authorities to increase maintenance grants to sixth form students in grammar and comprehensive schools.

Sir D. Eccles

No, Sir. Local education authorities have the responsibility of fixing their own rates of maintenance allowances for school pupils.

Mr. Boyden

Does not this work out very unfairly as between areas? If the right hon. Gentleman will not consider raising, or asking local authorities to raise, maintenance allowances generally, will he consider asking those which pay lower allowances to bring them up to the level of the higher ones?

Sir D. Eccles

I shall look into that.
