HC Deb 24 January 1962 vol 652 cc204-5
36. Mr. Parker

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will take action to facilitate an early resumption of work by Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox Ltd. on their contract for the West Thurrock power station, Essex.

Mr. Green

I am told that the parties are meeting shortly to try to find a basis for a resumption of work. In view of this, my right hon. Friend does not propose to take any action at present, but our officers will keep in touch with the situation.

Mr. Parker

Would the hon. Gentleman hold an inquiry into the cause of the dispute? There is a great deal of feeling in the area that the firm concerned, getting behindhand in a contract with the electricity board, has deliberately provoked labour trouble to escape the penalty clause.

Mr. Green

I appreciate the hon. Member's anxiety and I understand that there are difficulties on another site, but in view of the discussions which are taking place, I do not think that it would be appropriate to hold an inquiry at present.
