HC Deb 24 January 1962 vol 652 cc180-1
10. Mrs. Hart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if the Town Council of Lanark has informed him yet how long it will take to demolish the 460 unfit houses in the burgh, and to provide alternative accommodation for the families concerned.

The Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. T. G. D. Galbraith)

The Town Council has informed my right hon. Friend that it proposes to close 100 of the 460 unfit houses in the burgh in the three years 1962–64. I have no information about proposals beyond this period.

Mrs. Hart

In view of the fact that the hon. Gentleman's officials have already made an approach to Lanark Council on this matter, is it his intention to encourage them to speed up the demolition of the rest of the unfit houses? Is he aware of the frightful state of many of them?

Mr. Galbraith

My right hon. Friend is always trying to encourage local authorities to get rid of slums.
