§ 18. Mr. Rankinasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will bring the salaries paid in the lecturer grade of universities into parity with those paid in the Civil Service principal grade.
§ Sir E. BoyleI do not think that a pay link of this kind between these grades in quite different careers would be appropriate.
§ Mr. RankinSurely, the hon. Gentleman knows that the claim was submitted at the request of the University Grants Committee and deferred by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. In view of the fact that the pay pause has now to be stopped, does not the hon. Gentleman agree that this long-deferred claim for parity might have the attention of the Chancellor and a declaration with regard to his intentions?
§ *Note: Mr. Selwyn Lloyd should have said "£67½ million".
215§ Sir E. BoyleI am well aware of the desirability of an early announcement and it will be made as soon as possible.
