HC Deb 17 December 1962 vol 669 cc876-7
16. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Minister of Health what salary scale attaches to the post of chief welfare officer in his Department, applications for which were recently invited.

Mr. Powell

£2,565 per annum.

Mr. Robinson

Is the Minister not aware that at least half a dozen local authorities pay their chief welfare officers a considerably higher salary than this, and since his chief departmental officer ought surely to be at the top of the welfare profession, how does he expect to get the best applicants for the job at this salary?

Mr. Powell

There has been, in fact, no lack of applicants for the job. This salary was recently fixed by agreement through the Civil Service negotiating machinery.
