asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the imminent closure of the Rothes pit, he will now designate Glenrothes as a development district in accordance with the provisions of the Local Employment Act.

My right hon. Friend is now considering this.

How soon will the hon. Gentleman come to a decision? Is he aware that many miners in that part of the country are deeply anxious not only about the future prospects in their own industry, but also about getting alternative employment? Will he speed up a decision on this matter?

We shall certainly speed it up as much as possible.
