§ 33. Mr. Boydenasked the Minister of Education what grant was paid to the National Institute for Adult Education in 1961–62 to enable the Institute to conduct its inquiry into the accommodation and staffing of adult education; and what grant he proposes to make during the next financial year.
§ Sir D. Eccles£2,000 was paid in 1961–62, and up to £500 has been offered for 1962–63, towards the cost of completing the job.
§ Mr. BoydenIs the Minister aware that this is barely adequate for the completion of this job? Can he cast his mind back to the Swansea annual conference in which he himself suggested that this line of development should be a permanent feature of the National Institute? Can he hold out some hope that next year he will be prepared to make an annual grant which will enable permanent inquiries of this sort to be made?
§ Sir D. EcclesI must consider the question of subsidising a permanent research unit. As the hon. Gentleman remembered when he came to see me, I was not able to accept that at the time.
