HC Deb 12 April 1962 vol 657 cc1488-90
24. Mr. C. Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will now approve some measure of constitutional reform for St. Helena.

Mr. Maudling

I am glad to report that the earlier proposals, by which the present nominated Advisory Council would be replaced by one consisting of eight elected and eight nominated or ex officio members, are now generally acceptable. I am arranging for the necessary constitutional instruments to be prepared as soon as possible.

Mr. Hughes

May I say how glad I am personally to welcome that information, and to express the hope that this new experiment in St. Helena will be a great success?
