HC Deb 11 April 1962 vol 657 cc1314-5
11. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the urgent need for better road travelling facilities within the north-western area, and for more inter-city roads and bus services for people going to and returning from their employment; and what action he is taking in the matter.

Mr. Marples

The road programme includes many schemes, large and small, to improve traffic and travelling conditions in the north-western area. The provision of bus services is primarily a matter for the operators who are in the best position to assess local needs. Although the bus arrangements look complex on paper, I think they generally work well in practice. However, if the hon. Member has any particular cases of difficulty in mind, I will gladly look into them.

Mr. Ellis Smith

I am encouraged by that Answer. If the local authorities on whom the Minister puts the responsibility prepare constructive schemes on the lines suggested in the Question will the Minister give them sympathetic consideration?

Mr. Marples

I will certainly look at any scheme put up jointly by the local authorities.

Sir C. Osborne

Will my right hon. Friend look at cases where existing bus companies have practically a monopoly and oppose the running of a service in the villages by smaller bus companies, and see that the smaller bus companies are not prevented from doing so?

Mr. Marples

My hon. Friend is assiduous in these matters and I will ask him to give me details which I will look at.
