HC Deb 11 April 1962 vol 657 c1301
23. Mr. Scott-Hopkins

asked the Minister of Transport what progress is being made with the improvements undertaken last year to deal with increasing traffic congestion during the summer months on trunk roads in and leading into Cornwall.

Mr. Marples

Work has started on the widening of Barnstaple and Wadebridge bridges.

In addition nineteen trunk road improvement schemes in Cornwall and its approaches were committed in the last financial year. Together these nineteen schemes will cost some £290,000. Work on nearly all of them will have been completed in time for the summer traffic peak.

Mr. Scott-Hopkins

Is my right hon. Friend aware that that is fine as regards the trunk roads, but he has recently reduced the classified roads programme in Cornwall with the result that, although the trunk road congestion will not be too bad, on the unclassified roads it will be increasingly worse during the summer months?

Mr. Marples

I am afraid that I cannot agree with my hon. Friend's supplementary question, even though it grieves me not to agree with him.
