HC Deb 11 April 1962 vol 657 cc1323-4
39. Mr. Fisher

asked the Minister of Transport what plans he has for experimental one-way traffic arrangements on parallel western exits from London such as the Embankment, King's Road, Fulham Road, Old Brompton Road, Cromwell Road, Kensington High Street, Bayswater and Notting Hill Gate.

Mr. Marples

I have been considering the western exits for possible one-way schemes. I have already put proposals about Fulham Road and King's Road to the local authorities concerned. As soon as any plans for other routes are ready, I shall announce them. One difficulty is that a one-way scheme, to be successful, requires two routes which are reasonably parallel and close together, and some exits, I am afraid, do not provide these.

Mr. Fisher

In view of my right hon. Friend's great success in these experimental one-way working arrangements in other parts of London, would he try to expedite the western exits, where some of the groupings I have mentioned would, I think he would agree, lend themselves to such schemes?

Mr. Marples

Where they lend themselves to schemes like that, I certainly do my utmost to force them through, but I must say that, in certain instances, the local authorities have not been as quick as they ought to have been in assisting me. In any case, they will not be allowed to delay things for too long, because I am quite certain that some of these one-way schemes would be of great benefit to London's traffic.
