HC Deb 11 April 1962 vol 657 c1327
25. Mr. J. Wells

asked the Minister of Transport what representations he has received from shipping interests on the subject of improved cross-Channel communications.

Vice-Admiral Hughes Hallett

My right hon. Friend is in constant touch with the shipping industry and it with him on a number of matters affecting cross-channel communications. As regards a Channel tunnel or bridge several representative organisations have already given us their views.

Mr. Wells

May I have an assurance from my hon. and gallant Friend that he will give particular attention to the representations of the special committee of the Merchant Service Officers' Association which believes, I understand, that efficient Customs, larger ships and modern port installations would be a great deal more efficient and a good deal cheaper than either a tunnel or a bridge?

Vice-Admiral Hughes Hallett

The current joint study being undertaken with the French Government includes examination into possible improvement of the cross-Channel shipping services.
