HC Deb 11 April 1962 vol 657 cc1310-1
22. Mr. Scott-Hopkins

asked the Minister of Transport, in view of the proposed closing of the Chasewater-Newquay and Launceston-Plymouth lines by British Railways, what alternative measures to provide transport he has in mind.

Mr. Marples

The British Transport Commission's proposals for closing these lines are still under consideration by the Transport Users Consultative Committees. In examining the proposals the Committee will consider the need for alternative services. I can only take action if the Central Committee makes a recommendation.

Mr. Scott-Hopkins

Will my right hon. Friend give an assurance to the House that if it should be decided to close these lines he will accept responsibility for providing alternative transport for freight and for passengers using the existing lines at the moment?

Mr. Marples

I will consider whatever recommendations are put before me at a later stage. I should prefer at this stage not to comment on details but to look into every single aspect of the matter before making a decision.

Mr. Scott-Hopkins

May we take it from my right hon. Friend's reply that he will give an assurance that he will do what he can for the people in these rural areas?

Mr. Marples

I will not give an assurance, except to say that every point put forward will be considered.
